Let your legislators know -- Healthcare is a Human Right!!

Healthcare-logo On May 1st, 2009, at the Statehouse in Montpelier at noon, join thousands of your fellow Vermonters to enjoy an afternoon filled with musical performances, street theater, giant puppets, games, and guest speakers. Invited speakers include Senator Bernie Sanders, and Dr. Deb Richter, a Montpelier physician, who has long been campaigning for health care for all Vermonters. The Healthcare is a Human Right campaign is ultimately about shifting the way we think about healthcare and building enough power to change what is “politically possible” in Vermont. As a major step towards this goal, at 12 Noon on Friday May 1, 2009 there will be a rally of thousands of Vermonters for Healthcare is A Human Right. There are over one hundred organizations who have endorsed this effort and local organizing committees are mobilizing for this rally in almost every county in the state. Take the I'll Be There Pledge or check out the Worker's Center for more information.

Your pup has something to ask you...

Anti-smoking dog2

Of all the compelling reasons to quit smoking, this one should make pet lovers sit up and take notice: there's ample scientific evidence to suggest that secondhand cigarette smoke can cause cancer in companion animals.

And your furry friends don't just inhale smoke; the smoke particles are also trapped in their fur and ingested when they groom themselves with their tongues. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that dogs in smoking households had a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer; a different study published in the same journal showed that long-nosed dogs, such as collies or greyhounds, were twice as likely to develop nasal cancer if they lived with smokers. And in yet another study, vets from Tufts University found that cats whose owners smoked were three times as likely to develop lymphoma, the most common feline cancer.

Ready to kick the habit? There are free patches, lozenges and gum available to you through the VT QuitNetwork, or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for extra support. We also have more information on our Tobacco Cessation webpage. Your pets will thank you!

*Thanks to UVM Health and Wellbeing for the graphic and Smokefree Society for the info.

Marriage Equality passes today!

Congratulations to all supporters of equality and especially to the Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force! Thank you also to our legislators who voted on the right side of history today! Please read this important update from Freedom to Marry, and join us tonight at 7pm at the new Two Friends Bistro, Vermont's new gay bar and restaurant on Williston Road next to Higher Ground and Quiznos to celebrate! There will another victory party at the Two Friends on Friday night too!

Vermont's House and Senate made history today, overriding the Governor's veto of S.115 and making Vermont the first state to embrace the freedom to marry through our elected representatives without a court order. Congratulations to all of us!

The final vote in the House was 49 votes to sustain the veto, and 100 votes to override it -- an override by the slimmest of margins. We are deeply indebted to legislative leaders for recognizing the importance of our families and our rights, and to all those legislators who stood by us -- some at considerable political risk. The courage that many leaders have shown over the past several weeks is inspiring, and we've seen the best of representative democracy in action. To our supporters in the Legislature: You have stood up for us, and we will stand with you in the days to come. We urge you to write each and every legislator (House and Senate) who stood with us on the override vote. Let them know you appreciate their support, and what they've been through.

This is a proud day for Vermont and Vermonters. Throughout this three and a half week process, we have engaged with one another with as much civility and respect as possible given the intensity of the heartfelt views many of us -- across the spectrum -- brought into this debate. And in the end, we did the right thing. The forces of justice, fairness and love proved far stronger than one man's veto pen.

And along the way, we built new bridges. The debate galvanized the majority of Vermonters in the quest for fairness and inclusion, uniting the business community, clergy and ordinary folks from the four corners of our state. In our editorial pages we've seen compelling calls for justice, personal stories, and thoughtful analysis. And in communities around the state, thousands of Vermonters stepped up to the plate -- writing your legislators, coming to the Statehouse, knocking on doors, and making phone calls. Some of you have never engaged in the political process before, and some hadn't thought much about the freedom to marry until it hit the front page. But you opened your hearts, heard a better future calling, and dedicated yourself to making our world a more loving place.

And the courage of every single legislator, and the commitment of every single volunteer and donor, has made a difference. We made it over the top without a cushion. Every single one of us has truly mattered.

Your actions matter to Sandi and Bobbi, who can finally get married right here in their own home state after 42 years of committed life together -- through life-threatening sickness, job loss, and the challenges of parenting, as well as the joys of raising a child, being grandmothers, and sharing each other's company.

Your actions matter to Nina and Stacy who have spent a dozen years advocating for children of gay and lesbian parents -- including their own. It matters to their son, Seth, who deserves to grow up in a world that recognizes, respects, and protects his family as much as any other.

Your actions matter to Scott, who as an adolescent struggling with his sexuality regularly contemplated suicide because he felt less worthy than his heterosexual siblings. And to the next generation of Scotts whose load will be lighter in a world where our laws don't reinforce outdated social stigmas.

Your actions matter to kids that haven't yet been born, youngsters who don't yet realize how we made a better world for them, and soulmates yet-to-be-joined by fate or good fortune.

Vermont can serve as a beacon of hope to the kid on the playground in Indiana, bullied by his peers because he's not macho enough. To the lesbian mother in Georgia in fear of losing custody of her child because she's gay. And to the worker in Montana who is afraid to come out to his boss for fear of losing his job.

To all of you -- thank you for making this difference!

We are planning a party, to celebrate justice and thank all who made it possible. Stay tuned for details. And thanks to all for proving that, in the end, love prevails!

Marriage Equality Comes To Vermont

I Do, And So Can You!

Today is a tremendous day for the people of Vermont as well as the people of this nation. The Vermont House vote to override Governor Douglas' veto came in 100 – 49 in support of the same-sex bill, S.115. This decision makes Vermont the first state in the nation to pass same-sex marriage by way of legislative process. Not only does this law send the message of equality, but it also sends a message of hope to other states that have yet to acknowledge LGBTQ families and their quest for full marriage rights.

The passing of this bill took the work of thousands of Vermonters, Vermont Freedom to Marry (staff, board members, volunteers), RU12? Community Center and the countless legislators who supported this effort for human rights. There are many, many names that need to be recognized but at this point all I can offer is a huge heart-felt thanks to all. Thanks to everyone who invested time, energy and love in getting this law passed. Words cannot express the amazement I felt as I witnessed this historic day.

Please click the link for further details about the amazing efforts of Vermont Freedom To Marry.

Congratulations!

Come to the State House tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7th for Veto Override Vote

As you may know, the Marriage Equality bill passed both the Senate and House last week and the Governor now plans to veto away our rights as early as tonight or tomorrow morning. Please read the most current update from our hard working friends at the Freedom to Marry Task Force...

This is it! After all our hard work, it all comes down to tomorrow morning. Please come to the Statehouse Tuesday morning; through your presence, help us urge our legislators to support fairness for our families!

The Vermont Senate is expected to concur in the House amendments to S.115 late this afternoon, and will promptly deliver the bill to the Governor. The Governor is expected to veto the bill and return it to the Senate for an override vote, likely Tuesday morning around 9:00 a.m. The bill must go to the Senate first because the Senate introduced the bill. After the Senate completes its work – and it is expected to vote to override the Governor’s anticipated veto – the bill will be messaged to the Vermont House of Representatives. The House will likely vote on the override question some time after 10:00 a.m., and most likely before lunch.

None of this is cast in stone. Timetables in the legislative process can break down for various reasons. But this is our understanding of the expected timetable. You should arrive early to ensure you get a seat in the Senate and/or House Chamber.

So many of you – thousands of Vermonters and friends beyond our borders – have supported our efforts in so many ways. We’re grateful to all of you, and proud of what we have accomplished together over the course of the past decade. The House’s and Senate’s overwhelming votes for equal rights during the past two weeks have signaled clearly and unequivocally that full equality in Vermont’s civil marriage laws is inevitable. Let’s hope we get there tomorrow!

A message from the Freedom to Marry!..

Sgtathands

Tomorrow, the action on S.115 moves to the HOUSE floor, and WE NEED YOU to be there.  How can we ask our elected representatives to advocate for us if they don't see us advocating for ourselves?  Please spend the day at the Statehouse.  Wear your freedom to marry buttons.  Let your Representatives see that you care.

The full House is scheduled to debate and vote on S.115 on Thursday. The House will take up the budget bill first, and it's impossible to predict how long that discussion will take.  It could take the better part of the day.  But you can be sure that the House chamber will fill up quickly. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE HAVE A VISIBLE PRESENCE IN THE ROOM, so get there early (8 a.m. would be great, but don't stay away if you can't get there until later.)  Please understand that we may have to hold our seats for many hours through the budget debate before the proceedings on the marriage bill begin. Bring a book. Bring a sandwich. BUT PLEASE MAKE THE TIME TO BE THERE SO YOUR REPRESENTATIVES SEE THAT YOU CARE DEEPLY ABOUT THIS VOTE.  Our families, our future, and our rights depend on it.

If you can't be there first thing, we'll keep our web site updated throughout the day so you know the status of the House proceedings. Don't be deterred if you CAN'T get there early in the morning; we expect that the Sergeant-at-Arms will open up overflow space if the House chamber fills.
In the meantime, please help us make a better future for Vermont by volunteering to phone bank, reaching out to your legislators, and donating money.  It's not too late to get a message to your legislator by calling 802-828-2228.  And it's not too late to get everyone you know in your district to do the same.
GO TEAM!

"Sexercise" yourself into shape!

The National Health Service [in England] has some new advice for people struggling to schedule a fitness routine into their daily lives - a workout between the sheets. According to the NHS Direct website, "Sexercise" can lower the risk of heart attacks and helps people live longer. Endorphins released during orgasm stimulate immune system cells, which also helps target illnesses like cancer, as well as wrinkles, it states.

If you decide to begin a new workout program, remember that another way of staying healthy is making sure your "sexercise" is "safe sexercise." We have a whole new assortment of dams, lube, and condoms for free, available at the Center!

Celebrate STI Awareness and Testing Month with a good workout session! And for some entertainment, bring on the dancing condoms!
