See You at the Dinner!

Dinner09-banner-simple Thanks to all of you folks who bought tickets for this year's 11th Annual Queer Community Dinner. We're looking forward to a great turn out, a fabulous auction and a hilarious performance by Sabrina Matthews. Don't forget, we expect you at the Sheraton, promptly at 6pm with hat, boots, bandanas and bolos!

Tickets are no longer available via the website and you cannot purchase tickets at the door.

We have a handful of "severe procrastinator" tickets available. If you need one, email ann@ru12.org before noon on Friday and ask nicely. After this point, you will need to call RU12? at 802-860-7812 and leave a message with your contact info. We can't guarantee that we'll be able to fit you in (caterer's rules), so if you don't get a call back, you're out of luck for this year (sorry!)

Queer connection to Lake Champlain Deadline Approaching!!!!

Treasures_and_tales

What Does Lake Champlain Mean to You?

Use our easy online form

or download a pdf form

TAKE PART: The Fleming Museum invites you to participate in its upcoming exhibition, A Beckoning Country: Art and Objects from the Lake Champlain Valley, which will examine the Champlain Valley landscape through the objects and art created from and inspired by its features. The exhibition is organized around four themes - water, earth, flora and fauna - and will include a wide variety of material such as stone tools, maps, furniture, textiles, and baskets, as well as paintings and drawings from the Fleming Museum, UVM's Special Collections, and public and private collections. Beginning in July, selected objects and stories from members of the community will be displayed throughout the exhibition as well.

The queer community is a vital part of the Lake Champlain community! Seeing items submitted by members of the RU12? community would add a wonderful dimension to the exhibition. We want to see a variety of objects and images from around the lake.

TELL YOUR STORY: Help us tell the story of the Champlain Valley by sharing items of personal importance (objects, pictures and mementoes, etc.) that relate to your own experience of Lake Champlain. Describe in 100 words or less what your object means to you and how it reflects your experiences with and feelings about the Lake.

IT'S EASY TO PARTICIPATE Send us a picture of your item, the completed form (download here and available at the Museum's reception desk) AND your description by June 1, 2009.

E-mail: fleming@uvm.edu
Mail: Fleming Museum, 61 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, VT 05405
Drop off: at the Museum's Reception Desk during regular business hours.

The Donor Sibling Registry: Educating, Connecting and Supporting Donor Families

Dsr As LGBTQ people, our families are created in a variety of ways. For those of us who have either chosen to have children from donor semen or eggs, or for those of us who were ourselves conceived through using a donor, the Donor Sibling Registy may be an interesting resource.

The DSR provides:

  • Donor-conceived people the opportunity to locate critical medical and health information from their biological donors
  • Donors the chance to anonymously or openly share family, ancestral and genetic details with their offspring
  • A place for mutually desired communication to begin for donors and their donor-conceived offspring
  • A site for donor-conceived half-siblings to connect and extend their family ties
  • A comprehensive, secure and positive environment of information, studies, support, and resources for parents and their children
  • Advocacy for the rights of donor-conceived people and education about the issues, and challenges of their community
  • The opportunity to connect without even having a donor ID or number

Interested? Check out this info and more on their website!

Safety Dancers....Safety Dance...You Can Dance if you Want to....

Thank you to all who come out at the end of April to support the SafeSpace Program! The Safety Dance took place at the Monkey House in Winooski and it was a great success for a first year event!

We are going to do it again next year. April is Sexual Violence Awareness Month and the Safety Dance will be our annual awareness event to put a spot light on Sexual Violence Awareness - we will promote safe sex, safe tips for being out, keeping your drink safe while out, and of course SAFETY DANCING!!!!

If you have ideas for the event for next time around we do hope that you will contact us here at the Center and share them! We are always looking to make improvements and changes!

Thanks again to all of you who came out and supported us and the work we do! See you again next time around - and remember...
you can dance if you want to
you can leave your hats behind....
cuz if your friends dance, and if they all dance,
then their friends of mine!!!

Hey! Maybe we will all see one another at the ANNUAL DINNER - Coming up on May 30th!

Wondering who will understand? Who will support you?

Supportgroup

You are not alone!

SafeSpace runs a weekly peer led support group for LGBTQ survivors of domestic, sexual and hate violence. We provide a space for survivors to share experiences and offer support and encouragement to people in similar situations. These groups give LGBTQ survivors a safe and supportive environment to tell their stories, share information, and offer and receive support. Support groups also provide survivors an opportunity to gain information on how to better cope with feelings that surface because of the trauma they have experienced. Please call Brenda or Ann at SafeSpace 863-0003 if you are interested in joining a group. Remember you are not alone.

There Really is No Place for Hate...

Hello everyone, I am sure that many of you have heard about the recent hate speech directed at the LGBTQ community put up by someone who defaced our banner that was hanging outside! We wanted to respond...we asked the media to come over and take some pictures and do a few interviews...all of that happened. We appeared on Channel 3, Channel 5 and Fox 44!! If anyone has a copy of any of the news stories we would love to see it!

So anyhow....responding to the tagging - we invited the media over and we decided that we needed to directly respond and create a new banner which we have now done - this banner was created with the help of a wonderful volunteer, Shawn Lipenski and it is now hanging outside of RU12? IMG_4187

Please come by and see it! We have had many people stop in and tell us how sorry they were about the last banner getting tagged, and expressed their frustration about the hate that goes behind calling people names and they were thrilled to know that we were responding with a very positive message "THERE IS NO PLACE FOR HATE"

Thank you to all of you who cared enough to stop in, those of you who called or wrote in and all of you that support us in however you do it - you all mean so much! We know that the support of the Center is far reaching and we appreciate it!

Thank you Charlotte!

We are incredibly blessed at RU12? to have so many supporters, including amazing volunteers and interns who give of their time and talents.

This year Charlotte Rochon did her first year social work internship here at RU12?, as she works towards her Masters in Social Work at the University of Vermont.

Charlotte worked on Transgender Day of Remembrance, our brand new Transgender Resource Guide (soon to be uploaded to our website), the RU12? Resource Library, the LGBQQ Support Group, SafeSpace, the Drop-In and Front Desk, the Annual Dinner Auction, and so much more.

THANK YOU Charlotte for all your wonderful work this year, we will miss you!

If you are in the area, please stop by the Center to say thank you and goodbye to Charlotte either today or tomorrow May 6th or 7th as she finishes up her internship.

If you are interested in being an intern or volunteer at the Center, email Brenda@ru12.org for an application.

THANK YOU!
