While this historic document is an enormous step toward our civil rights, there is still much work to be done to ensure that LGB service members that serve openly are treated with respect and acceptance by those they serve with. It is also important to keep in mind that the DADT repeal only protects service members from discharge based on sexual orientation. The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) urge transgender service members to examine the implications if they choose to come out to fellow service members. Definitely true. This is a big step forward but there's still a long way to go in terms of culture change in the military and trans inclusion. There is more information on being transgender and being in (or thinking about) the military in our post.
