Groups Work Together to Serve LGBTQ Seniors

Imagine growing up in a world where your government legalized discrimination against you and took away your right to privacy. Imagine living in fear of being beaten in the street and having nowhere to turn to for help. And imagine living under the constant threat of losing your job, family, friends, and children, so doing whatever you could to hide who you love rather than celebrate it in public.

This is the world in which many older gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adults lived their entire lives. Some bravely came out and lived the best they could, while others remained closeted. Today, these individuals are part of the fastest growing age group in the Vermont – those over the age of sixty.

RU12? Community Center Documents Rise in LGBTQ Bias Incidents and Victims of Violence

RU12? Community Center’s SafeSpace Program has received 5 reports of alleged anti-LGBTQ bias related incidents at businesses in Vermont in July. Three of the alleged incidents are related to employment and two involve biased customer service.

"SafeSpace typically sees a spike in the summer months of individuals reporting incidents of intimate partner violence however this summer we are seeing double the number of Bias/Discrimination and Hate Violence incidents reported from 2011.” said Brenda Pitmon, SafeSpace Coordinator. “ The recent rise in reports is of great concern to us."  RU12’s SafeSpace program is working to address these reports and in several of the cases is in communication with the Human Rights Commission.

SafeSpace has also experienced a sharp rise in the percentage of new clients across forms of violence, with a 56% rise between February-March, 2012 and April-July, 2012. SafeSpace staff is working to help ensure that these survivors receive the most relevant and the safest services possible.

RU12? encourages you to report violence you experience or witness to our SafeSpace Program at 802-863-0003 or toll free 866-869-7341, where you can speak with a counselor and seek support, or you can report violence anonymously online via a secure reporting form on our website, www.ru12.org.
