Ideas for New RU12? Group

Sams photoHi! My name is Samantha and I am a new intern here at RU12?. I am interested in starting up a group here at RU12?, and would love to hear some of YOUR ideas! Is there something on your mind that you feel you and others would benefit from meeting and discussing? What group have you always wanted to join but haven’t had the chance to participate in? It could be anywhere from supportive to lighthearted, silly and fun. Are you experiencing grief and loss, trying to get healthier and want some extra support, seeking advice or want some new parenting tips? How about a queer book or movie club? This could be a great way to meet new people and really know that you are not alone in whatever you are experiencing or celebrating. Please let me know any and all of your ideas and lets make something happen! You can reach me at [email protected]  or call 860-7812.

Chandler Center for the Arts: Randolph, Vermont

Uncover the truth about marriage for gay and lesbian Americans. "8"—a new play by Academy-award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk, J. Edgar)—demystifies the debate around marriage equality by chronicling the landmark trial of Perry v. Schwarzenegger. Learn about the historical context of marriage from expert testimony. See the human cost of discrimination. Uncover the arguments used to justify bans on marriage for gay and lesbian couples. Using the actual court transcripts from the landmark federal trial of California's Prop. 8 and first-hand interviews, "8" shows both sides of the debate in a moving 90-minute play.

Trans Town Hall: Know Your Rights, December 6th

TTH

Trans Town Halls occur the first Thursday of each month at 6:30pm at the McClure Multigenerational Center, located at 241 N Winooski Ave (same building as Outright VT). They are open to all trans and gender non-conforming people and allies. The space is accessible to people with disabilities and refreshments will be served.

This Thursday, December 6th, join us for a Trans Town Hall focusing on knowing your legal rights.

What are my rights?
What happens if I experience discrimination or harassment? What can I do if I get stopped by the police and they want to search me? What happens if my legal documents have different names or sex markers? What are the laws around marriage for people who transition?
Life sometimes presents us with legal challenges. A way to protect ourselves is to empower ourselves with the legal knowledge to help us get through these situations. In December's Trans Town Hall, come with your questions, worries, triumphs and experiences to share with, and learn from, other trans and gender non-conforming people and allies.
Jes Kraus, J.D., will offer information on some of the most common legal experiences faced by trans people. Jes is the Director of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Office at the University of Vermont. Prior to his career at UVM, Jes worked as an attorney and as the Director of a public sector labor union for nine years, and served as a police officer for five years. Jes was instrumental to the passing of the expansion of Vermont's Anti-Discrimination Act to include gender identity and expression in 2007. He earned a B.S. in Government from the United States Coast Guard Academy, and a Juris Doctor (cum laude) from Vermont Law School.
For more information, contact Jean-Denis at [email protected] or call 860-RU12(7812).

Gay Pakistanis, Still in Shadows, Seek Acceptance

By MEGHAN DAVIDSON LADLY

Published: New York Times 11/3/12

LAHORE, Pakistan — The group meets irregularly in a simple building among a row of shops here that close in the evening. Drapes cover the windows. Sometimes members watch movies or read poetry. Occasionally, they give a party, dance and drink and let off steam.

The group is invitation only, by word of mouth. Members communicate through an e-mail list and are careful not to jeopardize the location of their meetings. One room is reserved for “crisis situations,” when someone may need a place to hide, most often from her own family. This is their safe space — a support group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Pakistanis.

“The gay scene here is very hush-hush,” said Ali, a member who did not want his full name used. “I wish it was a bit more open, but you make do with what you have.”

That is slowly changing as a relative handful of younger gays and lesbians, many educated in the West, seek to foster more acceptance of their sexuality and to carve out an identity, even in a climate of religious conservatism.
