Internship Opportunities: Spring 2014

Internship opportunities

RU12? has six internship opportunies available for students in Chittenden County:

  • The GLAM Interns will assist in the coordination of RU12?'s fun, social HIV prevention

    program, GLAM. Two openings exist for this internship.
  • The Marketing and Outreach Interns will participate in various stages of print and online marketing and outreach projects. Four opportunities are available. 

All internships will be able to provide opportunities for skill development, gaining experience in their respective fields, and fulfilling internship or college credit requirements. Interns receive training, tailored assignments based on interests and skills, and supportive supervision from our staff. See below for details!

 

GLAM Intern:

Description

RU12? Community Center is looking for two interns to help plan events for gay, bi, and trans guys who like gay, bi, and trans guys for GLAM, RU12?’s Mpowerment program. GLAM is a group of young gay, bi, queer and/or trans guys who are coming together, getting out, and enjoying the connections we make. Through building a stronger queer community in Chittenden County, we empower one another, support each other, and fight the HIV epidemic. Glam pride

This fun and meaningful project is run by and for GBQT guys. Interns of all identities are encouraged to apply.

This intern should be prepared to work in a deadline oriented team environment, and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of event planning, marketing and community organizing.

Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly core group meetings every Wednesday at 6:30pm
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of weekly social events for GBQ folks on the masculine spectrum.
  • Assist in the distribution or delivery of marketing materials via social media networks, through the organizations website and through direct contact with collaborating agencies and members of the LGBTQ community.
  • Help recruit core volunteers and program participants at LGBTQ events in the area.

Requirements

RU12?  is looking for an undergraduate student in the Chittenden County area who is majoring in Art/Design, Gender Studies, Human Service / Non-Profit Mgmt, Journalism, Social Work, Community Development, Marketing Public Relations or any other related field.  This person should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially with web and social media. This internship would require a minimum of 4 hours per week.

Marketing and Outreach Intern:

Description

RU12? Community Center is looking for a tech savvy intern with an eye for design to join our fabulous team. Our organization provides services that celebrate and support LGBTQ Vermonters, and seeks an intern who can participate in various stages of print and online marketing campaigns.

This intern should be prepared to work in a deadline oriented team environment, and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of marketing and community organizing.

Experience in HTML or design is helpful but not necessary. We’re willing to train the right candidate.

Responsibilities 

  • Assist in the creation of e-mail & print campaigns, weekly e-newsletters and blog postings
  • Assist in the distribution or delivery of marketing materials via social media networks, through the organizations website and through direct contact with collaborating agencies.
  • Perform analysis of communications and outreach data.

Requirements

RU12? Hires New Health & Wellness Coordinator

Noh8 (1)RU12? Community Center is proud to welcome John Chagnon as our new Health & Wellness and GLAM Coordinator!

John grew up in Burlington and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Champlain College. He holds a deep love for the Burlington community in all its diverse flavors, and has a passion for helping others break through shells of oppression to embrace their own identity.

Profile (1)Over the years, he has been a part of many LGBTQ events across the area and served on the Pride Vermont planning committee. Professionally, he tends to focus on Marketing and Event Planning projects, having worked for various mobile media apps and Pride events from NYC to Los Angeles and many places in between.

He is thrilled to be able to use his professional talents in addition to his deep ties within the Burlington community to further a wonderful cause as Health and Wellness Coordinator: Providing resources that will help others live happily and healthily, while establishing great relationships through our GLAM program and events!

RU12? Welcomes two new full-time Program Assistants this summer!

Siena Dryden, Program Assistant


Photo (25)Siena is overjoyed to be working with RU12? this summer as a Civil Liberties and Public Policies (CLPP), Reproductive Rights and Activist Service Core intern. Siena is going into her senior year at Hampshire College, focusing on feminist health care, women’s public health, and creative writing. Previously, Siena has participated in local grass roots organizing in Western Massachusetts around abortion access, HIV/AIDS, and sexual/reproductive health care. Siena has also helped organize the annual CLPP Reproductive Rights and Social Justice Conference for the past three years. As a young queer feminist, Siena is especially concerned with bridging the gap between reproductive rights and HIV/AIDS. Thus, she is super excited to help develop RU12?s HIV programs to further reach and include women.


 

Chelsea Brochu, Program Assistant 

ChelseaChelsea is super excited to be working for RU12? this summer as an intern in the Family, Elders, SafeSpace, and Kink programs. Chelsea has recently graduated from Lyndon State College with a B.A. in Psychology and Human Services. During her senior year, Chelsea conducted research on the attitudes and beliefs related to sexual orientation on her college campus. She also wrote her senior thesis on the influences of culture on homophobia and heterosexism. Chelsea is very enthusiastic about building a greater sense of community between LGBTQ individuals and families, as well as providing support and advocacy. As a queer woman, Chelsea is very passionate about working toward social change within the LGBTQ community.

OVT ED SearchThe mission of Outright is to provide safe, healthy, and supportive environments for LGBTQQ youth, ages 13-22. Outright Vermont is hiring a full time Director of Education. The Director of Education is responsible for providing support, resources, and assistance to youth, adults, and school districts across the state of Vermont.

Key functions include:

 

  • Education and Outreach to schools and community organizations throughout Vermont, including presenting to 4000+ participants at schools in every county in the state

  • Managing Vermont's Queer Straight Alliance Network, including providing support, resources, and technical assistant to Vermont's QSAs

  • Planning and coordinating two major events, the Fall QSA Conference and the Spring Queer & Allied Youth Summit

  • Assisting with General Organizational and Administrative Support

Minimum qualifications necessary include a college degree in a relevant field (or a mixture of education and experience), proven ability to effectively communicate and present to diverse audiences, a valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively in state, and knowledge about the experiences of queer youth. Trans Resource Development Intern:

Description
RU12? Community Center is looking for a trans-knowledgeable and tech savvy intern to assist with the development of our Trans Resource Guide. Our organization provides services that celebrate and support LGBTQ Vermonters, and an updated, easy-to-use and more comprehensive list of providers, resources and information for trans people and their friends, families, and allies is greatly needed. RU12? Is seeking an intern who will be able to research trans-related information and resources, identify and contact healthcare providers, and translate data into a user-friendly webpage.

This intern should be comfortable making cold calls to providers, be able to identify accurate and effective information and online resources, and manage data. The intern should have a pleasant phone demeanor and basic knowledge of transgender issues or be willing to learn. Experience in HTML or webpage design is helpful but not necessary, as we are willing to train the right candidate.

Through the experience, the Trans Resource Development Intern will gain a better understanding of gender variant communities and the needs of the local trans community, grow as an effective researcher, and expand their technical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Research up-to-date information and resources for trans people and allies.
  • Identify and contact providers in Vermont, assess their capacity to see trans clients, and track this data.
  • Translate provider database and research onto a user-friendly online resource guide.
  • Create a printable version of the online Trans Resource Guide.

Requirements
RU12? is looking for an undergraduate student in Chittenden County who is majoring in Gender or Women’s Studies, Human Service / Non-Profit Mgmt, Journalism, Social Work, Community Development, Computer Science / Information Technology or any other related field.  This person should have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be an adept researcher. Webpage design and Excel experience is a bonus, and will be considered when choosing the best applicant for this internship position. This internship would require a minimum of 6  hours per week, and ideally 8-10 hours per week.

SafeSpace Works With VT Attorney General's office to End Discrimination

SafeSpace received a report from a community member experiencing discrimination at their place of employment, a for profit company.  SafeSpace contacted the Civil Rights Unit at the Vermont Attorney General's office and made a report to the director. The Attorney General's office swiftly took action and contacted the employer to educate them on the scope of Vermont's anti discrimination protections. Within two days the matter was resolved to the satisfaction of the community member and SafeSpace.

The SafeSpace program works to end violence and discrimination in the lives of LGBTQH individuals. Advocates are available to provide support, advocacy, information and referrals.  If you or anyone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, sexual violence, hate violence or discrimination please call SafeSpace at 802-863-0003.  SafeSpace also provides an online anonymous reporting option:

Brattleboro: Position Open With The Men's Program

POSITION OPEN WITH THE MEN'S PROGRAM

Part time (20 hr/wk) HIV Prevention Specialist sought for the Men’s Program, a community-building, peer-led HIV prevention program.

Successful applicant will be energetic, outgoing and Internet savvy.  Position provides direct in-person and online prevention outreach to gay & bisexual men in Windham County and adjacent communities and is primarily responsible for establishing intensive outreach initiative to gay/bisexual men under age 35. Duties include, but are not limited to, community-building among gay & bisexual men of all ages, frank discussion of HIV sexual risk and risk reduction, and small group facilitation.

Applicants must be knowledgeable of and experienced with social media, and able to work comfortably with gay/bi men of all ages, with a focus on younger men. Experience with HIV/AIDS and prevention work preferred.  Some weekend/evening work required, must have own transportation.  Excellent training provided.

‎**IMPORTANT UPDATE**

The elevator in the Champlain Mill is out of service for the next several weeks. In order to remain accessible, all public meetings, support groups and HIV testing services will now occur in the RU12? Community Center Annex located on the second floor (accessible from the 2nd fl ramp) The temporary space that the staff affectionately calls "Narnia" is located one floor above our current space, on the left side of the building if you are facing the entrance from the outside. Stay tuned as we will provide more detailed information developes.

We still have use of the full community center but the accessible 2nd floor location will be the entry point for almost all center activities. Please call if you have questions: 802.860.7812

Paid Opportunity: Pride Chair Wanted

WANTED: Energetic, organized, dynamic individual to oversee the Vermont Pride Committee. Outright Vermont, the RU12? Community Center, and Vermont CARES are teaming up to find a chair to help make Pride 2012 a successful event. A small stipend will be awarded.Responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of the Pride Committee and facilitation of meetings
  • Oversight and support of fundraising for Pride
  • Working with the fiduciary (Outright Vermont) to track the budget
  • Coordination with the City of Burlington and other venues to schedule and secure permits for Pride events
  • Management of publicity
  • Facilitating communication and organization of partners in Pride
