Out in Silence

Out in the Silence is a 2009 documentary film by Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer. It chronicles the chain of events that occur when the severe bullying of a gay teen draws Wilson and his partner back to the conservative rural community of Oil
City, Pennsylvania
where their own same-sex wedding announcement had previously ignited a controversy. Following the story of a small American town confronting a firestorm of controversy, this gripping documentary illustrates the challenges of being an outsider in a conservative rural community and the change that is possible when courageous people break the silence and search for common ground. Out in the Silence will challenge you to rethink your values and help close the gaps that divide our communities.

LGBTQA Film Series- St. Johnsbury

Brother

Brother Outsider - is a feature-length documentary film portrait of Bayard Rustin’s activism for peace, racial and economic justice, and equality for LGBTQ Americans.

A master strategist and tireless activist, Bayard Rustin is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the United States. He brought Gandhi’s protest techniques to the American civil rights movement, and helped mold Martin Luther King, Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence.

Rustin’s biography is particularly important for lesbian and gay Americans, highlighting the major contributions of a gay man to ending official segregation in America. Rustin stands at the confluence of the great struggles for civil, legal and human rights by African-Americans and lesbian and gay Americans. In a nation still torn by racial hatred and violence, bigotry against homosexuals, and extraordinary divides between rich and poor, his eloquent voice is needed today.

GEN Silent movie about LGBT Elders available for free home screening

105 FULL RES-7-Edit-Edit

Last May, RU12?'s LGBT Elders Program teamed up with community partners Champlain Valley Area Health Education Cener (CVAHEC) and the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging (CVAA) to present a screening of the film GEN Silent, about several LGBT aging Americans and their struggle to feel comfortable being/remaining out in the context of getting older and accessing elders-specific services. This was one of several GEN Silent screenings statewide throughout the month of May.

Our screening was a remarkable success, with more than 100 folks coming out on a Wednesday evening for the film and following panel discussion, in order to bring attention to the issue as well as identify viable next steps, including the development of cultural competency trainings for elders service providers. RU12? will be debuting this training system this spring in the NEK, but until then, the powerful film that kickstarted our local discussions is available for free home-viewing until January 1. Check it out here: GEN Silent, or contact jean@ru12.org for more information about RU12?'s new LGBT Elders training.

Worst Thing About Coming Out

Title

Last year, a group of film students and their professor, Rob Schmidt Barracano, started an online documentary called the WorstThingAboutComingOut.com to share coming out stories with those who are struggling with coming out or just curious. Their aim is to enlighten those who are not in the community and bring comfort to those who are having difficulties. The stories that are shared focus on the stages of coming out to oneself, to parents, and to friends; there is an emphasis on the anxieties and the fears that the person has before they are about to come out. Their goal is not to discourage people from coming out just to share feelings that many have before they are comfortable with themselves to come out.

This year, they have cut together a feature length documentary running fifty-nine minutes with all the stories they have collected thus far. They will be hosting a screening of the documentary on the Champlain College campus in Perry Hall on Thursday November 29th at 7pm for the community to give feedback.

They are always looking for people who are willingly to share their stories on film - no matter how big or small it is. If you have any questions please contact them atcrew@worstthingaboutcomingout.com

LGBT History Month

In honor of October LGBT History Month the RU12? Community Center will present a series of films that highlight the relationships that foster growth, compassion, understanding, and affirm individuality through community.

Join us at the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington this Sunday which concludes the RU12? discussion series with the film:

Chris and Don: A Love Story

Sunday Oct. 28th 2:00 pm - Pickering Room

Chris & Don: A Love Story is the true-life story of the passionate three-decade relationship between British writer Christopher Isherwood (whose Berlin Stories was the basis for the beloved Cabaret) and American portrait painter Don Bachardy, thirty years his junior. From Isherwood's Kit-Kat-Club years in Weimar-era Germany to the couple's first meeting on the sun-kissed beaches of 1950s Malibu, their against-all-odds saga is brought to dazzling life through beautiful, rare home movies and reminiscences from Don and many of their friends, including Leslie Caron and Liza Minnelli. With Isherwood's exemplary status as an out-and-proud gay hero, and Bachardy's eventual artistic triumph away from the considerable shadow of his life partner, Chris & Don: A Love Story is above all a joyful celebration of a most extraordinary couple.
