First Friday at Higher Ground - A Community Coming Together

First Friday (small file)
This week, GLAM is launching a new monthly event... "Board Gaymes" and chill time before heading out to dance the night away at First Friday.

First Friday at Higher Ground began after the closing of Burlington's beloved gay bar, Pearls, in 2006. At first a dance party for women, First Friday expanded to include ALL segments of the LGBTQ community. Through the years, this event has become a staple of our community and a place to get together with friends, meet new people, and get crazy on the dance floor to amazing local DJs.

RU12? Community Center will open starting at 6pm this Friday for the Board Game event, and will close at 9:30pm so guys can head over to Higher Ground. Early bird tickets to Higher Ground can by bought for $5 at the Higher Ground box office, or online here

GLAM and the National Mpowerment Project in Chicago

MPchicago

Our new GLAM coordinator John Chagnon attended a training session in Chicago this past week to gain perspectives from Mpowerment projects across this diverse nation and apply them to our own Mpowerment project here in Vermont!

GLAM Vermont is part of a national movement called Mpowerment. The Mpowerment Project is a model HIV prevention program that has been specifically designed to address the needs of young gay and bisexual men. Scientific studies demonstrate that the program reduces the rates of unprotected anal intercourse among this group, and thus lowers the rate of new HIV infection.

On Wednesday, 11/13, John will be discussing his findings from the national movement at our weekly GLAM Core group meeting at 6:30pm at the RU12? Community Center. Typically, our core group is for male-identified aged 18-35, but all are welcome to attend this week's meeting, and questions are welcome to see where YOU can fit into this effective and FUN intervention project. Pizza/drinks provided!

Message john@ru12.org for questions or more details.

Who says Halloween has to only be one day a year?

Community Center until this Saturday, November 3, from 11am-1pm.
Bring a dish to share, enter the Champlain Mill Building through 3rd floor ramp entrance or 2nd level by the library., and come have some Halloween fun! (Prizes for best costumes, and treats for all!).
Any questions/comments/concerns, please contact mailto:jean@ru12.org or call the Center at 802.860.7812. Check out this event on RU12?'s Facebook page.

Also, please note that the Estate Planning with Pride event scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday 10/30, has been cancelled.

Thank you for a successful Field Day!

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Geography aside, community certainly does make a difference. And last Saturday, September 1, RU12? had the great fortune of hosting a strong showing of LGBTQHA-identified families at Hubbard Park in Montpelier for a successful inaugural Family Program Picnic Potluck and Field Day event, this despite a long holiday weekend and competing end-of-summer events across the state. Faces were painted, water balloons flew, eggs were dropped, sponges were bucket-brigaded, soda bottles went flying, and hoops were hulaed--not to mention all the good food! A good time, it seems, was had by all. Thank you to all our volunteers (Heather, Crystal, Cat, Hannah, Corey, Alan, Jeffrey, Geoffrey, Jamie, Ashley, Corrine, Leigh and Bianca) and all the participating families for making it an event to remember! See our Facebook page for photos from the event, and see you all next year for the Second Annual!
