GLAMFlixx: Keep the Lights On: Weds. 2/20

Keep the lights onOn Wednesday, February 20th, join GLAM as we watch Keep the Lights On! Come to our weekly GLAM meeting at 6:30 and stay after for the movie! Snacks and drinks provided.

It's 1997 and New York City is in a state of intense flux when documentary filmmaker Erik Rothman (Thure Lindhardt) first meets Paul Lucy (Zachary Booth), a handsome but closeted lawyer in the publishing field. What begins as a highly charged first encounter soon becomes something much more, and a relationship quickly develops. As the two men start building a home and life together, each continues to privately battle their own compulsions and addictions. A film about sex, friendship, intimacy and most of all, love, Keep the Lights On takes an honest look at the nature of relationships in our times. -- (C) Official Site

GLAM is a group of young gay, bi, queer, and trans guys who are coming together, getting out, and enjoying the connections we made with one another. To get involved or for more information, contact Mike or Jean-Denis at glam@ru12.org or 802-860-7812.

From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine - "When an unusual classified ad inspires three cynical Seattle magazine employees to look for the story behind it, they discover a mysterious eccentric named Kenneth, a likable but paranoid supermarket clerk, who believes he's solved the riddle of time travel and intends to depart again soon. Together, they embark on a hilarious, smart, and unexpectedly heartfelt journey that reveals how far believing can take you." -- (C) Official Site

Worst Thing About Coming Out

Title

Last year, a group of film students and their professor, Rob Schmidt Barracano, started an online documentary called the WorstThingAboutComingOut.com to share coming out stories with those who are struggling with coming out or just curious. Their aim is to enlighten those who are not in the community and bring comfort to those who are having difficulties. The stories that are shared focus on the stages of coming out to oneself, to parents, and to friends; there is an emphasis on the anxieties and the fears that the person has before they are about to come out. Their goal is not to discourage people from coming out just to share feelings that many have before they are comfortable with themselves to come out.

This year, they have cut together a feature length documentary running fifty-nine minutes with all the stories they have collected thus far. They will be hosting a screening of the documentary on the Champlain College campus in Perry Hall on Thursday November 29th at 7pm for the community to give feedback.

They are always looking for people who are willingly to share their stories on film - no matter how big or small it is. If you have any questions please contact them atcrew@worstthingaboutcomingout.com

National HIV Testing Day- Stop In to RU12? For A Test!

HIV TD

June 27th is National HIV Testing Day!

This is an annual national campaign coordinated by the National Association of People With AIDS that encourages everyone to "Take the Test, Take Control".

RU12? will be offering free, anonymous walk-in HIV testing from 11am to 6pm. Tests are quick (20 mins for results) and painless (they're oral- no needles)! We'll be brewing up some coffee and dishing out small gift cards donated by local businesses (See list below).

In the USA, there are about 1.2 million people living with HIV, about 1 in 5 of whom don't know they are positive. People who find out that they are HIV positive earlier are more likely to stay healthier longer and are able to better protect themselves and their partners.

Not sure why you should take the test?
Feeling a little anxious about it?
Want to make an appointment?
Give Mike or Jean-Denis a call at 802-860-7812 or email us at glam@ru12.org.

Summer Semester

Summer SemesterOne of RU12? Community Center’s first programs is back! Summer Semester offers the opportunity for LGBTQ community members to draw upon the skill, ability and knowledge of our talented peers with short series of classes throughout the summer. Potential classes to be offered include: Basic Car Maintainance, Yoga, Financial Planning, Photography, Zumba, Resume Writing, Home Ownership and more!

Family Bowling!

When you host a bowl-a-thon, you recruit people to bowl on a designated day for your special event. Each participating bowler solicits a flat rate pledge among neighbors, friends, and relatives. This could be a fun way to get families to engage in supporting RU12? as well as having a great event for families to enjoy together.

Grab a Bite with Friends

Tee Off With RU12?

Hosting a golf tournament can be a high-profile, and often very lucrative fundraising event. A great advantage of hosting a tournament is the connections you make with local businesses and celebrities that support the RU12? Community Center. Plan a whole day event with lunch and prizes.

Whether you want to lead the organizing, participate in only one particular aspect of the organizing such as advertizing or outreach, or you only have time to show up at the event and help take care of logistics, we have the need for your time, energy, and commitment.

The recruitment session will introduce you to RU12's plans for 2012, outline the DCAT structure and present you with opportunities to get involved.
