RU12? Community Center Annual LGBTQA Celebration: The Big Reveal

RU12? Community Center Annual LGBTQA Celebration: The Big Reveal

Excitement has been building steadily around this event over the last six months. With our roots planted firmly in our past, RU12? is extending our community-centered work across Vermont and scaling up the Center happenings.  From our move back to Burlington last summer and showing the works of local LGBTQ artists at the Art Hop to co-hosting the Pride Dance, we are presenting more and more opportunities for our community and allies to get out into the world and celebrate. The momentum continues building and in the coming months, we will produce Pride Vermont, feature such notable artists as John Killaky in the Center space, present one of our popular Town Hall Series on growing our LGBTQ families, and offer a host of new and exciting social and educational opportunities.

All of these amazing new events and programs will happen under a new Center name!! Join us and be the first to hear it as we do our tantalizing Big Reveal.

Of course, what would all the newness be without a shift in our biggest event of the year? Join us at Echo for an evening featuring tasting stations with the most amazing dishes designed to impress, by three of Vermont’s leading caterers.

Just a few moments for LGBTQ Vermonters...

SamaraHey All-

The Samara Fund, part of the Vermont Community Foundation, has been a huge supporter of RU12? Community Center. We have been able to do everything from truly committing to a statewide expansion to strengthening the safety nets for LGBT seniors in the NEK because the Samara Fund has been there supporting LGBTQ issues. Now, you can help them out by taking this survey. They are seeking your opinion on needs and services that are important to you and the broader LGBTQ community in Vermont.

As our thank you for participating, at the end of the survey you will be able to vote for your favorite Vermont-based LGBTQ organization to receive a mini-grant of $250.  The organization with the most votes at the end of the survey period will receive this gift of appreciation. You can also use this link to share the survey on your Facebook page:

Vermont Burlesque Festival January 24 & 25th 2014

More than 55 burlesque performers, comedians, and variety acts from all over the United States and Canada will grace the two festival stages over a two night period, each night offering a different experience than the other. The time remaining will be filled with scintillating burlesque activities, including a burlesque bowling event, burlesque classes and a film festival.

It is the goal of the Vermont Burlesque Festival to “warm up Vermont” during its coldest month, just when cabin fever starts to set in. The festival will do this not only by entertaining its festival goers but by raising breast cancer awareness and funds for the Vermont Cancer Center, raising money for the non-profit charity RU12? Community Center, and by sponsoring a winter coat drive for those in need.

GLAM and the National Mpowerment Project in Chicago

MPchicago

Our new GLAM coordinator John Chagnon attended a training session in Chicago this past week to gain perspectives from Mpowerment projects across this diverse nation and apply them to our own Mpowerment project here in Vermont!

GLAM Vermont is part of a national movement called Mpowerment. The Mpowerment Project is a model HIV prevention program that has been specifically designed to address the needs of young gay and bisexual men. Scientific studies demonstrate that the program reduces the rates of unprotected anal intercourse among this group, and thus lowers the rate of new HIV infection.

On Wednesday, 11/13, John will be discussing his findings from the national movement at our weekly GLAM Core group meeting at 6:30pm at the RU12? Community Center. Typically, our core group is for male-identified aged 18-35, but all are welcome to attend this week's meeting, and questions are welcome to see where YOU can fit into this effective and FUN intervention project. Pizza/drinks provided!

Message john@ru12.org for questions or more details.

The Boogieman!

The 7th annual Halloween Ball is coming! We are all scampering around for our last minute costume ideas. The Boogieman

This year DJ Precious presents "The Boogieman!" This night of frights, chills, and bodily treats will work its dark magic and have you dancing into the deep of night! Doors open at 9:30pm, followed by a live set from Burlington's own Rue Mevlana. Last Halloween Rue Mevlana brought some serious beats and tantalizing vocals, and you're gonna get it again! After Rue Mevlana, Dj Precious will be spinning until close, giving you a true deep City experience with great mixes and new tracks featuring Deep House, Progressive House, Electro.

Green Mountain Cabaret will also be joining the event. The GMC group has become a Burlington favorite. Aside from their own productions, Green Mountain Cabaret was last featured at the annual fetish ball EROTICA in July, and like that night, they will be our costume judges. During the night they will be searching for the top 6 costumes. Once the choices are in, Green Mtn. Cabaret will open the contest with a fierce performance! After, the crowd will pick the best overall costume of the night. If you want to win then be seen! Talk your costume up! Dance like you have never danced before, and be super creative, because a big $$$ prize goes to the winner! "The Boogieman!" is 18+, and tickets are $10.

Precious says.. "Watch out Hunty..The monsters under your bed are getting hungry!" That also translates into DANCE, WERQUE, and have a damn good time on Halloween weekend!

Check out some sneek- peek tracks from Rue Mevlana's upcoming Halloween Ball performance!...

National Kink Coming Out Day

This Saturday, September 28th, is National Kink Coming Out Day.  Similar to the LGBTQA National Coming Out Day, this day is an opportunity for individuals to share their kink identity and experience with others.  It is as much a chance for pride and celebration as a time when self-identified kinky people can speak up to end discrimination against those in the kink/BDSM communities.  Allies and supporters can also speak up to de-stigmatize alternative sexual identities and expressions.

During this day, you may come out as much or as little as is comfortable for you, whether that involves sharing stories with loved ones or having conversations within your community.  Or, if you’re curious about the kink community, you can attend an event or class on kink, BDSM, consent, D/S relationships, and more.  No matter your identity, Kink Coming Out Day is about you and your unique experiences.

There will be an event this Saturday, the 28th, at the Soul Fire Studio, Chace Mill from 1 to 5.  This will be a low-key event, where people comfortable with coming out as kinky can do so in a safe space.  Even if you’re still exploring your own kink identity or just curious about the community, you’re welcome to show up and learn more.  A session on basic safety and consent will take place from 1 to 4, followed by a smaller social reception from 1 to 5.  This will be a great way to meet new people in a safe, supportive place and celebrate this important facet of our community!
